Global Drums is a world percussion group at the University of Lethbridge, which I have been a part of since 2014. They had a very outdated logo, so I volunteered with fellow New Media grad Kiri Stolz to redesign both the logo and create a mural for a tunnel on the University of Lethbridge campus that is full of paintings.

Mural

This mural represents the variety of cultures and musical styles that the group plays, including music from Japan, Africa, Brazil, and the Caribbean. The graphic on the top is composed of many of the types of sticks/mallets used to play the instruments.

The finished mural
Various sticks / mallets used in Global Drums, with a steel drum at the center.

Everyone in the group wears bright tropical shirts, so a bright mural to match was a no-brainer! The mural became so popular that it is now the group’s main logo.

This is the only mural I have ever painted, and the amount of time dedicated to planning, as well as making extremely clean line work (on a concrete wall) is something I am very proud of.

Filling holes with globs of paint, and a lot of time with a small brush ensured this bumpy surface has the smoothest lines in the entire tunnel.
